Medtronic Puerto Rico reached a manufacturing milestone recently when it produced its four millionth pacemaker. To put that into perspective, the island operation has likely earned the distinction of supplying the highest number of pacemakers implanted worldwide since the first was built locally in 1978.
“Medtronic currently supplies 50% of the pacemaker market. We could probably say Medtronic Puerto Rico has produced the most pacemakers that have been implanted,” said Manuel Santiago, vice president & general manager of Medtronic Puerto Rico.
Medtronic also announced a $6.3 million investment that will create 150 jobs in its Surgical Technologies Division in Juncos, which specializes in surgical instruments for the neurological system, spine, ear, nose, throat, orthopedics and general surgery.
Medtronic will bring new products to manufacture in Puerto Rico based on pioneering technology for surgical procedures. Santiago explained that recruitment of personnel has already begun and the hiring process will culminate in approximately 18 months.
The newly announced investment adds another chapter in the company’s steady development since it established its first manufacturing operation in Villalba in 1974. Medtronic now operates five manufacturing plants on the island: two in Villalba, two in Juncos and one in Humacao, which together generate more than 2,200 direct jobs.
The business generates a volume of $7 million in raw-material purchases from local suppliers, mainly packing products. In addition, it generates another $2 million contracting local companies, such as validation, physical plant maintenance, security, transportation and professional services.
“We started humbly in 1974 in Villalba making pacemaker leads with approximately 18 people. It was kind of like Medtronic testing the ground in Puerto Rico. In 1978, Medtronic decided to open the first pacemaker manufacturing facility in Puerto Rico (Humacao),” Santiago said.
“The success story of those two businesses in Puerto Rico opened the path to continue to grow, utilizing the existing expertise that we developed over time. Of course, the opportunity to have access to tax incentives was also a key ingredient,” he said.
With a presence in more than 120 countries, Medtronic has 38,000 employees around the world. “Puerto Rico is the only location in the world where five of Medtronic’s six global business divisions operate. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the government of Puerto Rico,” noted Santiago, who has been with Medtronic for 26 years, seven of those at company headquarters in Minneapolis.
“Our principal goal is to continue to save millions of lives by maintaining the continuous training and improvement of our best asset, our employees who, on a daily basis manufacture the best products that positively impact lives around the world,” Santiago said.
“The medical-devices industry has been steadily growing and demands higher skilled labor. It is one sector that has reflected the most industrial promotional activity in terms of job creation and expansion potential. This is confirmed by the new investment by Medtronic, which represents a vote of confidence in our investment climate and added value in Puerto Rico,” said Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co. Executive Director Javier Vázquez.
“Medical-devices manufacturing is of fundamental importance for economic activity. For each direct job generated, 3.1 indirect or induced jobs are created. This is due to various factors, including well-paid salaries that impact other sectors of the economy and increased purchases of local goods and services,” he said.
Puerto Rico ranks among the top-10 in manufacturing jobs (full and part time) in the medical-devices industry in the U.S. Highly regarded for its high-tech manufacturing expertise, Puerto Rico has a flourishing medical-devices cluster, led by global companies such as Medtronic, Baxter, Boston Scientific, Cordis and Stryker.
Exports of medical devices exceed $2 billion annually and Puerto Rico ranks among the top 10 internationally in shipments of medical and scientific devices.
The Pridco director said Puerto Rico is home to 56 medical-devices manufacturing plants, which generate 14,613 direct jobs. This sector also generates 44,570 direct, indirect and induced jobs, representing approximately 5% of Puerto Rico’s gross domestic product, 9.4% of total net revenue and a reported export value for fiscal 2009 of $3.6 billion.
