Mayagüez-based Caribbean Biotechnologies Inc. (CBT) recently received a patent from the U.S. Office of Patents & Trademarks for an innovative technological concept that can detect infectious diseases and biological agents quickly and precisely.
Patent 7,595,864 is one of 12 granted to a Puerto Rico business so far in 2009. Dr. Jorge E. González, president of Caribbean Technologies Inc., said the path from concept to the awarding of the patent took two years.
“CBT, with financial assistance from Puerto Rico’s Economic Development Bank, developed a detection system for bio-aerosols that permit instantaneous detection and identification of biological agents in the air. We use a unique technique of optical detection, a major advancement compared with current technology that requires long waiting periods,” González said.
Bio-aerosols are defined by the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists as airborne particles, large molecules and volatile compounds that are living, contain living organisms or were released from living organisms.
CBT utilizes a vanguard technology designed to obtain microparticles in the air and analyze the specific optical response of the agent measured through a technique known as multiple photons fluorescence. The combination of the optical response and size of the particles can determine if the particulate is biological to identify it.
The system developed by CBT is capable of monitoring air quality, detecting and identifying bacteria and mold spores in open and closed environments and can alert authorities of any possible threat. It can also detect patients with infectious diseases, like tuberculosis. In the same manner, it has the potential to detect and identify viruses.
“This technology could be a method to identify H1N1,” González explained.
González hopes to have instruments, which can implement his technology, commercially available in approximately two years. “Machines for this technology don’t exist anywhere,” he said.
However, CBT currently has a working machine designed by González in a lab in Mayagüez that is focused on testing a benign family of tuberculosis bacteria. He soon will take his initial results to the federal Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) offices in San Juan. From there, he plans to conduct a preclinical study in Haiti.
“In the early part of 2010, we are going to do a preclinical study in collaboration with the World Health Organization in Haiti because that country has one of the highest incidences of tuberculosis. We will take those results to the CDC and, if they are good, will embark on a full-fledged clinical trial worldwide with the Food & Drug Administration,” González said.
“I am excited about the potential of this technology, particularly because it is from Puerto Rico,” he concluded.
